TJ Moretto

Jerad’s best friend since their sophomore year at Cherry Creek High School and more than likely Jerad’s hairiest friend. If you need a guy that can perform for your city’s Mustache for Cash charity competition, or a guy that can architect computer software in more languages than Jerad, you have your man. During his meat eating days in high school, TJ and Jerad became pals. Together the boys were crude, loud, and sometimes pleasant to be around. In those days Jerad and TJ could be found on the tennis court winning Colorado high school state championships together, or out hazing the younger freshman. Today TJ and Jerad are still hanging tight, but TJ has digressed and became a vegetarian. Although TJ is not as strong as or nearly as fit as Jerad, he frequently accompanies Jerad to gym, where he racks Jerad’s weights and carries his sweaty towel. It’s a great act of charity.

Paul Hillman

Jerad’s first cousin on his father’s side and Jerad’s archrival in most family related competitions. Paul’s who is also known as “his Chainess” or just “Chai,” was Jerad’s travel companion and mentor throughout India, Nepal, and Southeast Asian in 2000. Chai is the word for tea on the Indian subcontinent. In the west it generally means a spiced black tea made with milk (masala chai). In this case, Chai is an elevated expression and term of endearment, coined after those annoying men who sell chai tea on overnight train rides throughout India by yelling “CHAI, CHAI, CHAI,…” Paul is a true Harbaugh legend for having the most outstanding mustache in the whole family, or maybe by anyone ever.

Jerad and Paul can usually be found competing. Most of their competitions revolve around eating greasy food. Amongst their favorite places to compete are: In and Out Burger, where their sheer excitement and trash talking ends with the consumption of at least two 3x3 burgers (three meat patties stacked on top of three cheese slabs), an order of fries, a shake, and a drink, or Tasty Dog, an Oak Park, Illinois hotdog stand where a typical outing will lend itself to boys consuming a “Tasty Dog,” (a hot dog with cucumbers, tomatoes, pickles, and onions), a pizza puff (a deep fried pizza), a fully deep fried taco (yep, the lettuce is fried too), gravy bread (picture a cup of hot fat poured on white bread), a shake and an order of fries. (Jerad lived with Paul in Ventura, California after college, and they spend most all Christmases together in Chicago at the Hillman manor.)

Andrew Lumpkin

Perhaps the most talented person ever to walk this earth, Andrew remains Jerad’s tallest and lankiest friend. Whether its foot bagging, squash, mountain biking, darts, golf, tennis, or Duck Hunt on the original Nintendo, Andrew is unbelievably good, and easy to admire.

Jerad and Andrew became friends as youngsters in Colorado junior tennis where Andrew had quite the “edgy” reputation. This is all too funny because Andrew is the polar opposite today! One of Jerad’s most thrilling teenage experiences was while sitting shotgun in Andrew’s white Honda Civic. Enroute to tennis tournaments to play doubles together and usually late to leave for matches, the boys could be found passing other cars in both the left and right shoulder lanes at triple digit speeds to get to their matches on time…oh and by the way, Andrew is an impressively good driver as well.

Today, Andrew kicks Jerad’s butt in squash by scores that you don’t need fingers on a hand to count Jerad’s points. Andrew is an elitist Mac owner and has far better fashion taste than most women.

Boris Sepesi

By far the most educated of Jerad’s friends, Boris has accrued over 28 years of academic education and still has at least five more years left until he’s a full fledged cardio-thoracic surgeon. Jerad and Boris originally met (on the tennis court) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Midwest regional tennis tournament in 1997, where Boris edged Jerad. At the time, Jerad was an arrogant freshman at Purdue and Boris was a seasoned sophomore at Miami of Ohio. Boris was Miami’s top recruit probably because he was ranked #1 in Slovakia and #8 in the world in boy’s junior tennis.

The following year both Jerad and Boris transferred to the University of Colorado, where they played on the CU tennis team together and roomed in the same apartment. During that time Boris was putting the mac on Phaedra (Jerad’s sister). It all ended well being that Boris is currently married to Phaedra and is now father to latest addition of the Harbaugh family, Eva.

Marshall Scallan

Hands down Jerad’s funniest friend. If you need a good laugh scout Marshall out at the wedding. Marshall represents the Australian contingent, Jerad’s crew of friends that showed him what the word fun meant while studying abroad in Sydney, Australia in 1999. Marshall has done standup comedy before, but no, he will not be performing as part of the wedding.

One time Jerad and five of his Australian buddies wore onesies (one-piece) Ghostbusters costume for Halloween. Marshall wore that same costume for three straight days after Halloween…

Brian Mankwitz

The only person to look better than Marshall in a onesie is Mankwitz in a Spiderman onesie. In 2004 after Brian finished up school and the London School of Economics he moved in the Humboldt St. house with Jerad for several months. It was during that time that Jerad learned how insomniacs with minimal wardrobes tend to streak the house late at night in costumes made for eight year olds.

You would have thought that Brian wrote the book “Winning Ugly”, but that book was actually written by Brad Gilbert (Andre Agassi’s old coach). Brian held the Colorado state high school lacrosse goal scoring record by primarily scoring “garbage goals.” Likewise, he walked through many of tennis tournaments using two hands on each side of the racquet, a technique previously used only by female athletes such as Monica Seles back in the 1990s.

Dietz Fry

Jerad’s most financially risk adverse friend and most athletically risky friend. Whether it’s telemarking, kayaking, or any other extreme sport Dietz is willing to participate. Dietz’s favorite sport is short distance accuracy throwing…throw any object any where…if you can aim it and throw it in something else, Dietz loves it.

Dietz taught Jerad how to string a tennis racquet and how to gamble on every single pitch of an MLB baseball game. Truly, every pitch you can bet on any outcome with any odds…Dietz loves it. And of course Dietz wins every time. Another little tidbit, Dietz and Jerad took a sewing class in the 8th grade together, a class that was after the gym class they had where they both could beat the instructor in badminton. You all would laugh to see us in those little read gym uniforms!

Mike Schwarz

Jerad’s college roommate and fellow graduate of the CU Telecom Master’s program. Mikey is a wine aficionado and a strategic consultant in the field of geek. Jerad and Mikey have been known to talk for hours about computers, technology, finances, and other business related stuff.

A couple small tidbits, Jerad introduced Mikey to his favorite Indian dish – Chicken Tiki Masala. Mikey introduced Jerad to road biking on a mountain bike, only Jerad had no water or Powerbars to fuel him through the massive ride.

Paul Shovlin

Jerad’s most wild and crazy friend and a transient by nature. Pauli was born in England, moved to Johannesburg, South Africa at the age of four, and made the move to the United States when he was 18. As a tennis player ranked #5 in South Africa, Pauli was recruited to the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) to use his left handed serve and scrappy yet extremely athletic tennis game to win matches.

After his college graduation in 2000, Pauli moved to Colorado where Jerad and Pauli became friends through the Top Gun tennis league at the Colorado Athletic Club Monaco. The boys ventured off the courts and onto the Colorado ski slopes together. For the past three years, Jerad and Megan’s favorite snowboarding buddy has been Pauli.

As a man not afraid to try new things and known for his daredevil-like personality, Pauli remains Jerad’s favorite source of entertainment for self masochism. Jerad has personally witnessed Pauli knocking himself out while attempting a big air style jump at Vail and he’s seen Pauli do an involuntary front flip while out of control snowboarding moguls at Beaver Creek.

Lisa Vargo

Lisa is Megan’s sister and best friend. They enjoyed growing up together even though they would fight over the smallest little things including who would get the last M&M. When they were little, their mom put them in gymnastics so would stop jumping on the bed. Spending all day at the pool during the summer was one of their favorite things to do. They loved the times they spent at Lake Okoboji, Iowa with aunts, uncles and cousins. Both Megan and Lisa attended the University of Colorado, Boulder and were roommates Megan’s last year in college. There were many unforgettable memories, especially when their next door neighbors stole the furniture out of their apartment one night! Since then they have remained close. Megan loves that Lisa and her family live in Denver so that they can meet for dinner or coffee, go on ski trips together, or play with her 16 month old niece, Hannah!

Phaedra Harbaugh-Sepesi

Phaedra got the looks and the smarts out of the Harbaugh family offspring. She is Jerad’s older sister by two and a half years and was his number one fear during childhood. As kids Jerad would do anything Phaedra said – monkey see, monkey do. Phaedra made Jerad do belly flops off the high dive and so he did. Frequently crying, pissed off, and taken advantage of, Jerad would ALWAYS be the one to get in trouble. Phaedra was always too smart for her younger brother. She was the instigator and always had the last laugh.

Today Phaedra and Jerad are each other’s best friends, especially when it comes to perverted topics! If there’s an inappropriate topic to laugh at, rest assured that Phaedra and Jerad will be the first to crack up laughing.

Megan followed in Phaedra’s footsteps and attended the University of Colorado’s School of Dentistry…and better yet, they’re both female, both left-handed, and according to Jerad will dominate the Colorado dentistry scene together!

Breen Bailey

Breen and Megan have been through a lot together. They started playing soccer together in high school where they became great friends. They had classes together, played soccer together, and hung out together. Junior year of college, Megan and Breen spent a semester in Europe. They spent many days traveling on trains, sleeping in hostels and eating bread and cheese. After college, Breen and her husband moved to Oklahoma where she attended Physician’s Assistant school and her husband Drew attended medical school. They now have two boys, Cole and Ben.

Allison Jones

Megan and Allison have been friends since high school. They had many fun times including lunches at George Wallace park and having TP wars. Although Allison went to college in Tulsa, they have remained close. Now that Allison is back in Colorado, she is a gymnastics coach. She has adopted two beautiful grey hounds. Allison loves to travel as much as Megan. They hope to take trips together in the future.

Annie Holms

Although Megan and Annie went to high school together, they didn’t become good friends until college. Megan and Annie lived in the same dorm as freshmen and suffered through the difficult chemical engineering curiculum together for four years. Their daily routine included trips to Bookend or Trident coffee shops on Pearl Street to work on engineering problems. They spent one spring break backpacking with Annie’s brother Ryan in Capital Reef Utah. What a great trip! Megan has been a fan of backpacking ever since! Megan and Annie were roommates their senior year of college. Annie studied abroad for a year where she met her now husband Dougie. Now that they are married they live in Scotland. Even though Megan knows Annie loves living in Scotland, she hopes they move back to Colorado!

Hanh Phi

Dental school wouldn’t have been as exciting without Hanh. Taking turns bringing coffee in the morning helped make the long days of classes and the late nights in the tech lab more bearable. They had many happy hour gatherings with other classmates to drink margaritas while discussing how horrible and hard dental school was just to learn that work outside of dental school is just as hard. After graduation, Megan and Hanh traveled to Vietnam and Thailand together for a month. What a great experience! Megan couldn’t have had a better tour guide than Hanh. She has family and friends in Ho Chi Minh City and she speaks Vietnamese fluently. That trip was just what they needed after four years of dental school. They hope to continue traveling together and incorporate volunteer dental work into their travels.
